IHSG Likely to Move Sideways This Week, Rebound Chance Still on the Table

 Author : Pungky

The Indonesian stock market is entering the first trading week of February with a mix of optimism and caution. The Jakarta Composite Index (IHSG) is expected to move in a mixed range, with room for a short-term rebound but still facing strong resistance in the upper area.

Last Friday, IHSG managed to close higher, jumping around 1.18% to settle near the 8,330 level. This bounce gave some fresh confidence to market players after the index had suffered a fairly deep correction during the previous week. On a weekly basis, IHSG was still down almost 7%, showing that the broader trend hasn’t fully recovered yet.

This kind of situation usually puts investors in “wait and see” mode. Many traders are cautious about chasing prices too aggressively, while some short-term players start looking for rebound opportunities, especially in stocks that were heavily sold earlier.

Market Sentiment: Still Cloudy, But Pressure Is Easing

Over the past week, market movements were strongly influenced by global and institutional factors. Several large-cap stocks were affected by portfolio adjustments related to global index rebalancing. This made transaction values thinner than usual, as many investors preferred to stay on the sidelines instead of taking big positions.

However, selling pressure has started to cool down. This opens a window for a technical rebound, at least in the early part of the week. Some investors see this as a short-term opportunity, while long-term players remain selective and focus on fundamentally solid stocks.

That said, sentiment is not fully positive yet. Global markets are still dealing with uncertainty, and commodity prices—especially gold—have shown sharp corrections recently. This could weigh on stocks linked to precious metals and mining, limiting how far the rebound can go.

Technical View: Rebound Is Possible, But Resistance Is Heavy

From a technical perspective, the IHSG chart has shown early signs of recovery. A bullish candlestick formation has appeared after the recent decline, which often indicates that selling pressure is starting to weaken. This pattern typically attracts short-term traders looking for a quick bounce.

For this week, the index is expected to move within a fairly wide range. The lower area around 8,100 could act as a support zone, where buyers may start stepping in. On the upside, the 8,550–8,570 area is seen as the nearest resistance. If IHSG manages to break above this zone with strong volume, the next psychological target could be much higher.

Still, it won’t be an easy move. The resistance zone is quite heavy, and without strong positive catalysts, the index may struggle to move decisively upward. A sideways or “mixed” movement seems more realistic for now, with short-term swings dominating daily trading.

Strategy for Investors: Stay Flexible and Selective

In a market like this, flexibility is key. Aggressive buying may not be the best approach, especially for investors who prefer lower risk. Instead, gradual accumulation on strong support levels can be a safer strategy, particularly for stocks with good liquidity and solid fundamentals.

For short-term traders, technical setups matter more. Stocks that show clear reversal patterns or strong support zones may offer quick trading opportunities. However, tight risk management is still crucial, because market sentiment can change fast when global news hits.

Long-term investors, on the other hand, might want to use market weakness as a chance to slowly build positions in quality stocks. Rather than focusing on daily index movements, it’s better to look at business performance, earnings prospects, and sector trends over the coming months.

Technical Stock Ideas to Watch

Here are a few stocks that may attract attention from technical traders this week:

Bank Negara Indonesia (BBNI)
BBNI is showing signs of stabilization after recent pressure. The stock is technically in a recovery phase, with potential upside toward the 4,600–4,700 area. The key support lies near 4,380, while resistance can be found around 4,530. As long as the price holds above support, rebound potential remains open.

Elnusa (ELSA)
ELSA has been moving in a relatively volatile pattern, but recent price action suggests buyers are slowly returning. The stock has room to move toward the 745–800 range if momentum improves. Traders usually keep an eye on the 635 support level as a downside risk point, with resistance around 720.

Aneka Tambang-related Gold Stocks (EMAS)
Stocks linked to gold prices are facing more pressure due to the recent drop in global gold prices. Technically, this type of stock may still be vulnerable to further downside. Short-term traders often prefer a “sell on strength” approach in this kind of condition, using price rebounds as an opportunity to reduce exposure.

Erajaya Swasembada (ERAL)
ERAL is one of the consumer-related stocks that could benefit from improved sentiment if the market stabilizes. Technically, the stock has potential to test the 370–400 zone, with support around 334. If volume increases during upward moves, ERAL could become a short-term trading candidate.

Final Thoughts

Overall, the IHSG is entering the week with mixed signals. A short-term rebound is possible, especially if selling pressure continues to ease. However, strong resistance levels and lingering global uncertainty mean that upside may be limited for now.

For investors and traders, this is a market that rewards patience and discipline. Avoid rushing into positions without a clear plan. Focus on strong technical levels, manage risk carefully, and don’t ignore broader market sentiment. In times like these, staying calm and selective can make a big difference in long-term performance.
